slightly increase the brightness and slightly decrease the saturation thats the easiest way, you can of course play around with the curves to get the same effect or add layers but that can get a bit complicated to explain...or if you use gimp you can download a vintage look script that does all the work for you in one click :D

you will need to do a bit of research on creating layers but basically I created an image with white text on a black background and saved it to file, whenever I want to put the watermark in I open the file copy it close the file open up the main photo and add the watermark as a new layer set to "screen" that way all the black areas disappear leaving only the white text, I then merge all the layers down and save the completed image. Once you get the hang of it it is pretty simple to do.
