I just discovered the most amazing website where you can upload your photo and try it with various frames and a zillion mat colors - and even - choose the paint color of the wall behind - i found it useful to use a white against which I could compare various whites of the mats:

It's the best site I've found for actually seeing a good sample of the mat colors - Daniel Smith where I order a lot of paint supplies does a miserable job of showing the colors of their mats. I found the same brand at American Frame with a good size color sample and a huge choice of colors.
thanks for this as I suck at choosing mat colours! cheers. Now to find the site for the same thing with reading glasses ... anyone know of the 'chinese' site where you upload a pic of yourself (or face needing glasses)?
I spent a lot of time at that site last night - uploading photos and trying different mats and frames. It really helped me make some decisions. I won't buy everything there, but I will buy some mats and frames to appreciate them for making this great tool available. It makes such a difference to be able to see the photo in the mat and frame - I'm good at that when I go to the frame shop, but it's harder to imagine what to buy to do the framing on my own which is what I'm up to now.
