Cameras

Hi! Im 13 years old, & I love photography! Im looking into purchasing a new camera. I just am not sure what one yet. I was looking for a quality camera that had options, great for photography, but is easy to carry around. I am willing to spend some money on it, but a reasonable price. It doesnt have to be over the top, just a quality, reasonably priced. I would love some recomendations! Thank you all! I appriciate if you take the time to help!

I have used Cannon powershots for a number of years now.. I really like them, and would recommend that to you..
saying that I bought my son a Kodak easy share just before spring break, and its very good. Very good price.. under $ 100.

Hi @abbeygrace there are a range of Olympus cameras named "tough" cameras and these are well made point and shoot cameras that can be dunked underwater, can be dropped onto the hard ground and can be stepped on! I have an older model and it is a tough little camera that could handle whatever a kid of today can dish out. You don't have to worry about how protective you are of your new baby!

They take a pretty cool shot too and are easy to use.

@bobfoto very interesting, I didn't know these cameras. They seem to have only auto modes though, is it correct?

@scatcat - yup pretty much a basic point and shoot, but really rugged and tough. The macro and "super" macro are pretty good and the underwater feature is fantastic if you have access to a good snorkeling site. They say they're waterproof to a depth of 10m (30ft) but I have met guys who have taken them down to 30m (100ft) and not had any problems.

Don't get me wrong, there are better point and shoots out there, but as these ones are pretty indestructible, they make good sense for a young lady like @abbeygrace to swing around. I wish I had one when I was falling out of trees and off bikes like any healthy 13 year old does!

Having said that, at age 13, I had a big old Russian Film Camera with some pretty funky lenses, so perhaps @abbeygrace needs a DSLR?

oh and some of my 365 project has been taken with one of these Oly "tough" models.

@abbeygrace I've got one of the older Olympus models mentioned earlier, not a bad camera, very good for taking in a pool or to the beach.

I bought 2 cameras recently, 1 on an overseas trip, which was a Canon IXUS 210. Got a great deal on it as it's been superseded. What I love about it is that it's touchscreen with touch to focus, much like an iPhone. I love this camera as a compact.

The second I got more recently is a Canon EOS 600D (or Rebel T3i depending on which country you're in) as my first DSLR. A week later my girlfriend bought one too, they're fantastic! Much chunkier and pricier than a compact, but also much more versatile, depends what you're into.

@nikkers Thanks for the info! The one camera I was looking at yesterday was a canon powershot. Great cameras!
@bobfoto I have never thought to buy and Olympus, but from what you have said I will definately check it out!
@rustla Thank you for the wonderful info!(:
I really do apprciate all this information!

@bobfoto Yes, I was interested because I thought about this camera for my daughter (perhaps in 2-3 years though). Even if they are pretty basic, I like the idea to first learn composing the image before playing with fancy cameras.
Oh these Russian cameras! I have seen some on ebay! Great, strong stuff! :-)

@abbeygrace I have a Canon Powershot too. it's not young anymore and not as good as the newer models regarding ISO sensitivity, speed, etc. but it can be set fully manual, so it's interesting to learn and progress.

@abbeygrace - oh and if you do get an Olympus, you will also be able to capture blue skies like no other. For some reason Oly do blue like no other. Check out my 365 project for some pretty intense blue skies.

@bobfoto @scatcat Thank you for all the awesome help! Im now deciding between one Olympus & one Canon Powershot. Im leaning more to the Canon for all the options and great quality. Ive heard better reviews for the Canon. But the Olypus sound super fun! & Great as well. But not as good reviews.

@abbeygrace You are right about the differences between the Olympus and Canon. Think about what your aim is, about the camera you have right now. If you already have a basic P&S and really feel you are limited and wants to play with the settings, then go for the Canon (or equivalent). If you want to have fun with water for instance and bring your camera everywhere with no risk of damage and don't care about the settings, then Olympus looks great.

@abbeygrace @scatcat - in my humble opinion, I have taken a look through your 365 project Abbey and I think you take some pretty cool and fun photos. Maybe it is time you upgrade to a camera with some more manual settings, so that you can progress towards a DSLR. I would go the Canon Powershot, something more then just a point and shoot.

@bobfoto Thank you for the wonderful help! I honestly do appriciate it greatly! & My camera that I use now is a Nikon Coolpix L18. Its not very good, and i got it quite along time ago. I think I probably will go for the Canon. ( If my mom will help chip in!) Hah(:
@scatcat Thank you for helping me see the qualities in both cameras! The Olympus sounds fun, but I think im going to go with the Canon.(:

Thank you for anyone who helped me! You all are great people, and I'm going to check out your photos right now!(:

@abbeygrace cool! Way to go :-) I looked at some of your pics and I think you are right. You know how to compose a picture already, and some of them would be awesome with better quality, or better flexibility of the camera (for instance, the stairs, toes in the grass).

@scatcat Thank you for checking them out! & Yeah alot of my pictures turn out grainy or fuzzy & I hate it! I need a better quality camera.(: Thanks for the critque! I am very open to it(:
