A friend has asked me to take some pictures of her baby tomorrow(aged 6 weeks) . I am not a photographer, i like taking pictures and messing around with my camera but have no technical experience. However, I want to do a good job. I have a Canon EOS 500d with an 18-55mm lens, a 50mm lens and a 75-300mm lens. If anyone could give me any tips or advice I would be really grateful. By the way this is not a paid job!
Thanks in advance..x
Make sure the little one is warm and i have done a few shoots now, and just after they have woken up and had a fed seems to be a good time. :) good luck.
I believe at that age it is easier to work with than an older baby, because you can pose him/her the way you want, and he/she will pretty much stay the way you want. That is what I've heard. I have only ever shot a 4 month old baby, and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done...because he didn't stay in one spot, but he didn't do anything cute or interesting, either. I'm so not a baby photographer, though, so I'm just throwing this advice out there. :)
@laceyjogautreau thanks Lacey. I'm not sure if he is smiling yet, so i think it might be quite difficult. i was thinking of doing some pics of hands and feet and maybe taking a fluffy blanket for him to lie on...omg i am stressing! i am going to google baby portraits to see if i can get some ideas... i may need props!..x
I just did a newborn shoot with my 50mm... She screamed almost the whole time, except when she was being held. I would suggest to plan poses that you want to do before hand. And plan lots of poses with Mom and/or Dad holding the baby. Look here: http://pinterest.com/jessicadowdy/brand-new/
If you're shooting indoors, make sure you have lots of room to move around. That's one thing I wish I'd had more of... And lots of light! But not your camera flash! If it's warm enough, and the parents are willing, take the photoshoot outside.
@cfitzgerald thank you Courtney, thats a good idea.
@sweett thanks Jessica, those photos are really helpful, they are so cute.
Hopefully there won't be too much pressure on me as its not paid and for a friend.. I am completely out of my comfort zone..i usually photograph things that don't move!
Do be careful with your flash! They are usually far too bright so either have it turned off or if you have a speedlight be sure to bounce it off of something and away from their eyes. And be patient. =)
I can't open the links at this computer, but if you check out the links in this discussion it might help. If I remember right, she focuses almost solely on baby photograpahy.
i would use the 50 mm and like@sweet said, plan your poses and bring props if you can...maybe a basket, interesting toy, balloons, etc...also, check out some photographers on the web for inspiration...you will do wonderful!!! can't wait to here about the shoot!
@autumnseden thank you Autumn. I don't have a speedlight, but i'm hoping that there will be enough natural sunlight tomorrow! we have had some sunshine today. @shadesofgrey thank you Shades.. i have liked the page on fb..lisa has some beautiful pictures. @4stories Thanks Liz... i will let you know how it goes..x
@ronphotography Ron, I have used one shot as my 365 picture for 14 Sept (yesterday). The rest I am going to put on my facebook page ...after i have given a cd of the photos to my friend. Should be sometime later today. It was just an informal set-up for a friend...if i do this again I am definitely going to invest in props. http://www.facebook.com/RebeccaSianPhotography
@alk1991 thanks Adam, thats a good point.. i will make sure he's not tired or hungry...x
