Hahaha! Yeah - I was thinking about how they put them up high on pedestals in Yellowknife and the other day it occurred to me that this was probably why! Although I'm still not sure they'd be high enough in Yellowknife as the pedestals only give them an extra foot or two
I had a similar reaction the first time I saw poles stuck into the side of the road. Then a few weeks later it snowed, and it was clear - they were marking the side of the road so everyone knew what was what and where was where.
