I have seen this or one like it before and am curious why the zigzag pattern

I’m wondering if it has something to do with the angle of the waves and breaking up the power they have, making it less damaging to the structure.

@ellida I suppose it could have been a pier with legs perpendicular to the undulations to give as little surface area as possible for the elements to attack.
