Jupiter is the large orb shining out and the little dots (one on one side and three on the other) are 4 of his moons. I understand that Uranus is nearby and can just make out the smudge of a light slightly beneath the line of orbit... I wonder...
I went out fired up with enthusiasm that I could share my wonder of the night sky with you all... but it is no good, my little click camera won't reach the telescope with a tripod and my hand is not steady enough to home in accurately on the 391 billion miles or so to pick out the stripes and a perfect circle. The pleides just looked like a couple of white specks. Guess the human eye sees better than the camera's sometimes after all!
This is the best of the ~4000 I took.
Well, I love it. I've been watching the night sky too and wondering which planet is so huge right now. Thanks for the information. Now I know what I'm looking at.
That's pretty effective. Shooting the night sky is a whole area that I've had no success with at all. The trouble is that whatever I do, a DSLR with a 200mm zoom lens in an area plagued with light pollution, is never going to get anywhere close to the images that are readily available, taken with large telescopes in dark skies at the top of a mountain. However, there is something magical about seeing it with your own eyes.

It reminds me, one day I will have to buy a telephoto lens. It's impossible taking pictures of the night sky with standard or wide angle lenses.
