This wasn't on my list of 'must-see' as I thought that Notre Dame, being closer, would be enough. However, having seen it on the hilltop overlooking Paris from both the cathedral tower and the Musee D'Orsay it caught their attention so off we went. The guide book told us how to get up high, and we took a little furnicular train up even higher (believe me it wasn't just my legs that hurt by now). George got waylaid by a couple of traders who made him (and us girls) a braided bracelet each - as a present - then knobbled him for a payment behind my back. He doesn't speak much French so decided a modest payment was the best way to keep all his fingers!
Anyway, on to Sacre Coeur... the sunshine was glorious, and we stopped on the steps to soak in some rays and have some water and chocolate to fortify ourselves. Another wonderful view and a very contented time together just looking over Paris spread out before us.
We went up into the Basilica, shocked by the elderly folk literally begging at the doorway, shaking their little paper cups at everyone who passed. Inside was wonderful - the space was cavern-like and the painting on the ceiling just incredible. Scented votives seemed to light the way inside where the atmosphere was hushed and holy. No photography, but do go onto a search engine and look inside if you can, it was worth it.
We started off down the long hill into Montmartre towards the city centre, and I turned to take this shot with the brilliant blue sky behind the domes. I believe Joan of Arc is one of the verdigris statues at the front.
Gosh I am just finishing uploading and already I'm stunned and honoured at the views and comments that have popped up before me - thank you all for taking the time to stop by - I hope you have enjoyed my shots as much as I have enjoyed reading your kind remarks :) x
