Had a wonderful Saturday... my brother and his wife came over and we took them to Royston Cave. I knew he would love the age and history of it all, and she would love the Christian stories told there. I love it - the atmosphere and mystery are wonderful! Nobody knows who made these carvings, when or why although there are lots of theories.
I went there last year with George and Cathy and posted cropped shots of characters, this time I thought I'd share a view of an expanse of wall so you could see how the carvings are all clustered around. This includes a horse, a person, a ?Norman sword, a king and queen, the crucifixion, and who knows what else. To find out more about Royston Cave see www.roystoncave.co.uk/
Must tell you - outside the five of us marched over the road to see if we could see inside the cave from a drain cover at the top. We stood around the man-hole cover, looking down and realised 2 blokes were standing close-by, looking very alarmed at our behaviour. "We've just been down a cave" I told them, and they disappeared quickly into a shop with 'weirdo' written all over their faces! We could hardly walk for suppressing our embarrassed laughter!! =)
Really pleased that so many of you recognised the dashing figure of Zorro from my little shadow shot yesterday. Thank you all for your comments and views, they really are the grease that keeps this wonderful site well-oiled..! Have a sunny Sunday
Nice shot, Phil! :) This wall certainly tells a story without having to hear a word of someone telling it. Very cool carvings! I would have told the blokes that someone dropped an earring or lost a contact! LOL Great job on capturing such great detail! :)
How exciting. You could make a series of all the carvings this is so fascinating! Thanks for sharing and the guilty story. I often feel I look suspicious as I creep about taking photos.
Great shot of the wall and the clarity is surprising for a cave shot - love the story Phil - exactly what I would expect from you - those poor bewildered blokes!
