Very interesting. I would love to know if it is an atypical leaf. There is a fungus which grows up from a caterpillar it has "infected", but I think you would have seen them before now if this is the case.

@zosimasy @ethelperry I'll keep looking as I know where it is by the side of the road. I have a sense that it is a regular leaf encased by a membrane, but am not at all sure.

Skunk cabbage maybe? I think it belongs with the shoot and the colors on that remind me of either a Jack in the Pulpit or the aforementioned cabbage. You'll have to stay on top of it and show us what it turns out to be!
