Actually, just an experiment, trying to learn what can be done in the house with flash. This is bounced off the ceiling and I had to brighten the picture quite a bit. I'm thinking that the metering assumes the flash will directly illuminate the objects?

Your speedlight should do pre-flashes to meter. You most likely need an aperture wider than f/16, especially bouncing off the ceiling

Flash is so much fun but can also be intimidating. It looks great, the shadows are much softer than direct flash.
