Joan @joansmor has it figured I think - the fact that his arm hand and cup are almost perfectly exposed suggests that they were in that position for most of the exposure.
It is great how members help each other in this group. Like you I couldn't get the image I imagined but the advice given here in the comments will have me go back and experiment further with "long exposure"
