Variegated Fritillary Butterfly on Bastard Cabbage
This orange and black butterfly looks to me like a Variegated Fritillary. Suggest you also view it large. Here is info that I found online:
Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta Claudia)
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae
Variegated Fritillaries have brownish orange dorsal wing surfaces patterned with wavy, black lines surrounding lighter orange cells and a row of black spots and two blackish lines along the edges of both the dorsal forewings and hindwings. The ventral forewings are patterned with orange and tan, while the ventral hindwings are a variegated brown and tan.
Thank you for viewing and commenting, they are appreciated. Thanks for the favs for the white checkered butterly photo posted yesterday.
Linda I just love your close ups. I just wondered if you had to buy a special macro lens to get this shot or if the camera just came with it. I'm looking for a new camera and it's a tough decision.
@cindymc Thank you! I shot the butterflies with my Canon Rebel T1i and the 18-55 lens. I do not have a macro lens or a zoom lens. I would like to get one and may get around to it. I just get as close as they will let me, after I take a shot or two to make sure I get them. Then I focus the camera on the action (or sports) setting, in case they move their wings and snap away. I usually snap several shots then pick the one I like best out of those. Most of the time, they are opening and closing their wings and I feel that is when the action setting helps out.
@allisonrap Thank you! @naladka Thank you! I thought so also. @giffy@msrobynlb Thank you! @bigsusan55 Susan, I found it from a "google" search. They also have a Mexican Variegated Frittilary which has slightly different markings.
@stepheesue@farfaraway Thank you! @carmichaelbev Thank you! Some of these have been very hard to get a shot of. Maybe they were a bit tipsy from the pollen on the plant. I am posting a different butterfly tonight that was on the same plants.
