I have always thought the German tradition of unbelievably crazy fireworks everywhere at midnight on new years eve was a dangerous one. I always am really nervous around so many drunk people who are shooting explosives all around me.
Sadly this year a historic church in Aachen was the victom of a fire caused by fireworks. Either intentially or accidently, a firework was shot through the window of this church (you see the broken windows) Just behind the window there stood a gigantic early baroque altar from the early 1700's. The altar took up the entire end of the church from floor to ceiling. This started on fire and was almost completly destroyed. The pastor estimated the damage at at least €300,000, and the police did not find the culprit. A sad day when the city looses a great 300 year old piece of art like that.
Something that has lasted 300 years and all that history, gone, by some foolish act. How sad. I like the way the gentleman is glancing upward as though thinking the same thing.
Such a sad day. 300 year old beauty like this, destroyed by a firecracker? Uggg. So sad. This is a wonderful photo though....are those three silhouettes in the left side of the photo real people??? I see them, and they look like statues....maybe my eyes are just tired? Great photo Steve!
AMAZING street capture. This is the type of shot I am talking about that would make great a submission. The man looking at the destruction, the sihouette statues with umbrellas sheltering from the debris! Ha, I could go on. Great shot, Steve of a very sad event.
Your photo is beautiful, looks amazing in black and white.
