Kodak killed Kodachrome today...

RIP the most iconic photographic film to exist...

It might not have been the best slide film, or everyone's favorite, but there's no denying that Kodak Kodachrome was probably the most well known. Like Dwayne's Photo's (albeit cheesy) farewell tee shirt reads... Paul sang about it, a state park was named after it, and National Geographic shot their most famous photos on it.

Today was the last day for development. At 12.00pm CST, Dwayne's Photo in Kansas stop accepting rolls for development. There's actually rumors saying they will run out of development chemicals before all the rolls they did accept can be processed. Mine arrived December 20th, and I can only hope I am lucky so the memories aren't trapped forever on the emulsion.

I stacked up some of my slides on my bedroom window, and shot against a white sky (impending snow storm) with flash to capture this photo. I shot the Kodachrome-64 in my Nikon F5. This photo itself was taken with my Nikon D300, Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 lens with the on-camera flash.

Today mama finally took our Kodachrome away...
Excellent tribute.

Well done. Passing of an era, keep them safe for posterity. Tried to find a bulb for a slide projector a few years back and that wasn't easy...

@singer What's sad is that in 50 years these slides will still be perfect, but who knows if I'd be able to view the 50,000+ digital images I have taken so far in my life... hence why I've moved to capture much more important parts of my life on film.

Really neat photo and the info with it was very informative. Thanks, Heidi

Just saw this. Wow. What is ironic is that I haven't had reversal film mounted for a long time. I always take it unmounted, and either have them process to disc, or I shoot it with an extender and magnifier on a light table. Do they still make slide machines?

Also, for the record, I have been shooting for the better part of 40 years. Never shot one roll of Kodachrome 64. Ever. Many 25's back in the 80's. I was into the "less grainy" thing. Not that I didn't like 64, I just never did.

When Velvia came out about the time I moved to Indy (1990-ish?) I dropped 25 and never looked back.
