@crappysailor I race and do car shows, so it just kind of came with the territory. Figured out I could take better photos of my own cars than people with nicer cameras, so just fell into doing it. I had only been shooting with a DSLR for about a month before I had my first photos/article published in Nissan Sport :) Then started getting press passes to shows and events, got hooked up with a magazine, did work for them for about a year...
It's a hard industry, though. It's overly flooded with people with cheap gear willing to work for free. People will invent "online magazines" to get press passes and what not. So it's kind of hard to make any money because people will just find a buddy to take crappier shots. I've had luck shooting autocross and rallycross events and at least making my gas money back because most people don't have the skills or cameras to handle high speed photography.
