More flash experiments: one straight on, the other with the on-camera flash bounced off the lid to a cookie tin, to the light wall near the tree. I lost some of the brightness, but got rid of the glare. Hmmm...

That's a great collage to show the difference. I just avoid flash completely as I'm not keen on the results, but the tin lid trick is good - the shot on the rights looks much more natural but still well lit.
Have you tried bubble wrap on the flash, it gives you the light you need but stops the glare as the light is not as strong. You can make an easy cover with bubble wrap and some Sellotape and can then pop it into your camera bag to carry it with you in case you encounter a similar situation. I place it on the flash when taking night portraits and it helps avoid red eye too ...
