Another way that my on camera flash might be useful....as a fill light for a strongly side lit subject. This was a rough test (hand held) but I think the idea is on the right track. Of course, it doesn't come up often....but it's still fun to play.
No longer middle aged, and no longer taking pictures every day....but cannot quit yet.

Middle, middle. Middle-aged, middle America. I just like taking...
I do event photography. Most meeting spaces are harshly lit from above, and I use fill flash to light the hollows under eyes, and soften shadows on the features and clothing. Also, to I can drop the exposure so the lighting isn't so darned harsh. This is a more valuable technique than you may think. Learning a 'light touch' with flash is a great step.
Yes, depending on what kind of flash you are using. The little pop-up on camera flash usually adjusts itself, but never quite how you'd like as an artist. Speedlites are amazing things, and you can get pretty nice knock-offs for about a hundred bucks ~ then watch out! you can put them wherever you'd like, and adjust EVERYTHING about the light. It's like Pandora's Box ~ but in a good way.
