Panning for a Bicyclist by jbritt

Panning for a Bicyclist

More experimenting today--this time with panning. I tried panning once before, but this time I persisted long enough to get some decent shots. I could never learn to do this with a film camera! I stood on Wilson Blvd for quite awhile, and practiced photographing cars. Most didn't turn out, but I got a few decent shots. I particularly like the vehicles with writing because it's clear when they stay in focus.

I am an avid bicyclist so I am grateful that I had some practice before this man rode by. He must have been coasting because his leg is in perfect focus. It was an accident that I was photographing vehicles moving downhill, but I may do that on purpose if I try this on a bike trail.

A jeep pulled into the parking lot next to me as I was photographing it. The driver approached me and asked if I just took a picture of his car. I explained that I was practicing and he asked to see the shot and then we talked a bit about cameras.

A tow truck driver went around the block after I photographed him. The second time around, he stopped and photographed me from the cab of his truck. I have a picture of him photographing me. If my first shot had turned out, I could have shown them together.

Panning is something I will definitely practice more, and now I have hope that I can master it eventually.
O I can't wait to try this, what fun! I like this one, capturing detail and action at the same time. This is what I need to be doing when I take corners on my Wednesday rides, which gives me an opportunity to take action shots as the cyclist swing round the corner. I like how TIME is photographed when you combine a picture of action with a clear picture of the acting object. Way cool, I got a nice representation from simpling Googling images using the words "panning photography" (the latter term reduces the number of gold panning results) http://bit.ly/eMMRcV

I'm going to write up a few notes about this technique after some cursory research this afternoon, and look forward to trying this soon.
