Staircase in Smithsonian Natural History Museum

I went to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum today to see the Nature's Best Photography Exhibit. http://www.mnh.si.edu/exhibits/natures-best-2010/index.html Excellent photographs! I took some photos of spectators in the exhibit and others inside and outside the museum. I'm not sure why this shot of the staircase caught my fancy but it did. I liked the intricate designs, the light, and the shadows.

While I was at the museum, I also spent some time in the exhibit on Race. Interesting, but I will need to return to study it more.

I just saw Katie's photo from yesterday--she said it was too hot to do anything but stay inside in the air conditioning. That reminded me of something I overheard when I was biking home from the museum this afternoon. A young boy asked "What kind of a mall has no air conditioning??!!?" Nowadays the only one I can think of is THE mall, the national mall with museums and monuments all around and last week it had the Folklife Festival. Old-fashioned paper fans and shade-filled tents helped us handle the heat.
Love the shadows and lighting on the wall! Interesting catch...great eye for detail.

@marytj @drewhedden @katiecogan Thank you! I liked this but wasn't sure if I should post it since it seems so simple and there were so many things to see in the museum. I got some strange stares when I stopped to photograph the stairs.
