Texture and Color

I didn't have time to take photos today, but I stopped to snap this on my way to church this evening. I took basically this same photo two days ago but the DOF was too short. I went back yesterday, but the light was wrong--half sun and half shade. So this is my third try. I kind of rushed it tonight and like the angle of my first shot try better but it's really my only shot for today so I'm posting it.

Someone gave me a very strange look when he saw me taking this photo tonight. I could almost see the thought bubble above his head asking, "why would you want to photograph a doorstep? What could possibly be interesting about that?" I didn't have time to explain that I was searching for color and texture for a photo assignment, and he wouldn't have had time to listen anyway.

I just saw a local class is being offered this fall titled "Contemplative Photography: Zen through the lens". Sounds intriguing.

Here's the class description: "Zen through the Lens is a link between beauty and meaning, and a manifestation of the art of mindful-living. Its goals are to enrich the quality of life by improving awareness of the world around, enjoy everyday art forms, awaken the artist within, and create photographs that fit one’s own artistic personality. Participants will learn basic mindfulness meditation, the Zen of creativity, two ways of viewing art, three levels of seeing, visual designs, and in-camera composition. The class does not cover camera functions or photo editing techniques."
Actually I like this a lot
