Pre pupation Brimstone

Lost another caterpillar overnight, so very sad.
This one has decided where it wants to pupate and is anchored at the base of the tail by the cremaster and supported around the body by a silken girdle. It will rest, gathering its strength and for up to one hour will shrug off the final caterpillar skin using its 4000(!) muscles. Surely it hurts.
Everything is set to go, imaginal discs and enzymes are ready for the big transformation.
In about 16 days, it should be a beautiful butterfly and with luck I shall have witnessed the eclosion.
hope you catch it this year!

@koalagardens @fbailey @rontu @charmainezoe @milaniet @julienne1 It’s safely pupated! Now a wait. The caterpillar’s cells will be absorbed except those which the butterfly will need (brain, respiratory system etc) and the imaginable discs are now activated. These special cells are preprogrammed in the egg and will now become wings, compound eyes, legs, genitalia etc.

Thank you for making my pre-pupa popular
