Another shot from last night, as our staff sat around the campfire watching the dog teams go by. This is the annual Kobuk 440 which runs from Kotzebue to the tiny village of Kobuk and right ours. It is one of the qualifiers for the Iditarod. It is always a joy to watch those eager pups - they truly do love what they do!
When our son-in-law was stationed in Anchorage we had the opportunity to go to Wasilla to the Iditarod Headquarters and got to ride a dog sled of a sort. There was no snow so they had a sled with wheels and gave customers a ride.
@skipt07 There have been years where the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in Anchorage has had to have snow trucked in! But Anchorage is a lot further south than here! @milaniet@gardencat@sunnygirl@amyk@seattlite All the race dogs wear the booties to keep snow & ice from packing into and cutting their feet pads. The dogs are considered the real athletes and are given first priority in everything: food, warmth, medical care, sleeping arrangements, etc.
