I can explain. by jgoldrup

I can explain.

Short story: This is a spider beetle struggling in a drop of honey. Please view larger and help me figure out what those lines are around its back leg. Honey waves?

Long story: Actually, the long story makes me look like an idiot, so I'll just keep to the short one. It didn't die, but I realized too late that it deserved to.
Did it bite you??? Aggh I hate spiders! But cool shot. The lines around it almost look a thumbprint or something.

maybe vibration waves in the honey if it was struggling a bit?

@pwallis ~ No bite...just a beetle that looks like a spider. But when I was online ID'ing it as a 'pantry pest', it escaped. Off to chew on some of my grains, I guess! It does look thumbprinty.

@lauracaseyfoss ~ That would be cool if I got a photo of vibrations, but that does make more sense than waves. The beetle was too small to be making rock-the-boat waves.

okay well besides being a very creepy looking bug, especially viewed large, I am intrigued by these mysterious lines. cool shot!

Glad to hear no bite! Have no idea what the 'waves' are I'm afraid!

Not much for bugs, but a great closeup

Wonderful close-up! These lines sure are weird...

Sorry I can't help solve the mystery but it's an intriguing one. How rude of it not to stay put while you did the necessary research!

lol I'm guessing you got stung?

The "waves" almost look like they could be a reflection of window blinds? Maybe? He's free now, and he probably thinks he's invincible....beware.

just occurred to me that he might be a she....hope she wasn't looking to lay eggs in your pantry!

That is one freaky beetle. Spray first, look up freaky bug second. That's my motto. I have enough friends already!

@shutterbugger ~ I thought blinds too, until I remember that I don't have venetians! About the egg thing - exactly.

@kidatheart ~ Nope, just now worried about the escapee eating my foodstuffs...and possibly reproducing!
