Now (May 6, 2011): A designer discusses outdoor patio details with one of the owners of The Carleton Restaurant. Remember the show "Mike & Mike’s Excellent Cross Canada Adventures" on MuchMusic? They co-own the restaurant.
Then (May 8, 1945): My grandpa (on the left) and 2 of his navy buddies chatting up a store mannequin on Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day). The spontaneous VE-Day celebrations that happened here became known as "The Halifax Riots"; many shops and businesses were looted/damaged. My grandpa recognized himself when the photo appeared in Maclean’s magazine at the time, and my sister recently tracked it down and bought a copy of it (CP Photo/National Archives of Canada, C-079562).
I was able to ID where the old photo was taken by the plaque on the wall behind the men ("The Residence of Hon. Richard Bulkeley….Erected 1760"). There is still a plaque there, but it is now larger and placed higher up. I covered the new plaque with the old photo, not realizing that I had the men floating on air above the present-day sidewalk. Oh well.
I'm currently situated in Victoria, having previously lived in Beijing, Halifax, Chilliwack, Calgary, Vancouver and growing up in Northwestern Ontario. My aim with photography is...
I've seen something similiar to your link...out there somewhere. Very cool idea! Love that you were able to find that photo after all these years and place it!
