I am a biology nerd. by jgoldrup

I am a biology nerd.

I found this bumble bee lying on her back on the sidewalk, near death. I took her home and tried to make her last moments as comfortable as possible. Then, once she passed on, I stuck a pin through her and took some reverse macro shots.

Edits: To make a dead bee seem more exciting to non-biologists, I applied the heat map (combustion) and HDR-ish effects in picnik.
not sure what to make of it... its interesting thats for sure! and great detail... what you call the "hand" part? looks cool!

I initially thought you meant that your idea of making her last moments comfortable was by sticking a pin through her! Amazing how the word "Then" can make so much difference!
Cool pic and processing!

@kammy ~ That's my fave part too! Its 'hand' is called a tarsus, with a claw at the end. ;)

@onarom ~ I edited that bit...don't want anyone to think of me as a bee-killer! Thanks!

@kammy lol at the "hand part" comment! It's totally something I would say. I dig the detail and your processing on this:)

@jgoldrup thanks for that bit of info!!

@pwallis haha yes.. not very good at expressing myself...

Aw...I like that you took it home to make it comfortable in it's last moments. What a kind person.

Wait a sec.... How did you know it was truly dead when you stuck a pin in it? This all sounds kinda fishy. ;D Great processing there, JDG!

Poor little bee :( At least you recorded her beauty for us to see.

A little sad but I'm glad you were able to help the little critter out and then get this unique and engrossing shot out of it.

Very interesting shot, I like all the little bits and pieces on the tarsus. I've been thinking of how to get birds&bugs etc. unconscious to make them stay still for photos... of course sticking a pin through does the trick ;-)

Jani: try the refrigerator/freezer trick. Definitely slows them up for a while (or permanently, depending on how long you leave them in). Best to be discrete, though -- others who share your frig may not be happy.

Fantastic detail!

Fantastic photography here.

Janna Dawn this is all a bit shocking! Couldn't You have taken it without the pin... all sounds very dodgy, OCD to psychopath ;)

@slang ~ I held a mirror up to her mouthparts to check for condensation. jk.

@janmaki ~ As Bette mentions above, it does help to make them cold. I've done that with toads for a photography course. Felt really guilty about it, though!

@radclyffehall ~ Oh, but the pin ensure the legs are isolated up in the air for better photo taking! ;)
May 16th, 2011
Sweet! I'd do the same thing!

oh Janna yikes!!! i sort of feel bad for him, but the awesome detail makes it better
