These are historical re-enactors getting trained up as members of the 78th Highland Regiment at the Halifax Citadel. This Regiment was stationed at the Citadel from 1869-71. Parks Canada choose to focus on them for their interpretation program because of the Scottish heritage connection (Nova Scotia=New Scotland) and the cool kilt uniforms. I know this because I asked one of the re-enactors.
Edits: Played with some of the presets in Oloneo for this one. I made many versions, but ended up liking the “B&W Old Photo” one best. Any tips on exporting from Oloneo? Which colour palette, which resolution? I find that photos often look great in Oloneo, but then look blah after exporting.
I am going to organize/edit some more old photos, this time from a trip I took to Nova Scotia before I actually lived here. I don’t expect these photos to inspire anyone to come visit because May is a pretty iffy month to be travelling in Atlantic Canada. But it’s a great time to come if you want to avoid other tourists! Or if your sister is due to have child #3.
I'm currently situated in Victoria, having previously lived in Beijing, Halifax, Chilliwack, Calgary, Vancouver and growing up in Northwestern Ontario. My aim with photography is...
Good choice going with the old photo pre-set! Looks great (on my iPhone anyways:) and no, I haven't had that problem with exporting from oloneo, the opposite in fact. Hmmm.
I love the depth you gave the shot and the processing is very cool. Unlike some of us, you are great a giving a little info on your subject. ;) Thanks!
oooh I love kilts (and bagpipe music, and everything Scottish!) I wonder why the person on the end-on the left, doesn't have to stick their arm out too? I like this shot!
@laurentye ~He is the last in line - their arms are out for proper spacing btw them during marches. Not sure why the arms go right instead of left though. ;)
@jgoldrup Well they just look better once I can view them large on my screen, they're not necessarily better because of being exported. But I'm never sure what they truly look like until I get to view the large. I'm usually happily surprised with Oloneo. Sometimes not so much though.
@pwallis ~Ah, I see. Mine usually looks worse when I view them large b/c that's when I notice the HDR outlines (not halos, but a glowy line around things). Boo.
...great photo, Jedi :D
