"Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel.
The first ghost bikes were created in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003, and they have since appeared in over 150 locations throughout the world. For those who create and install the memorials, the death of a fellow bicyclist hits home. We all travel the same unsafe streets and face the same risks; it could just as easily be any one of us. Each time we say we hope to never have to do it again -- but we remain committed to making these memorials as long as they are needed." - ghostbikes.org
I'm currently situated in Victoria, having previously lived in Beijing, Halifax, Chilliwack, Calgary, Vancouver and growing up in Northwestern Ontario. My aim with photography is...
I've never seen this before....perhaps cyclists don't get hit in Calgary...HA!!! My paddling partner sustained a broken collarbone in crash this time last year. However, it wasn't your typical accident -- car hits bike...it was the result of thoughtless driving by another cyclist!!
I'm an avid cyclist and I've never heard of this before... AWEsome stuff!! Of course not the deaths but the memorials and reminders that we ALL share the road!!!
oh wow what a great idea! thanks so much for sharing this! a friend has just had a bad cycle accident and is still in hospital with pretty bad injuries, he'll be ok but this is a reminder alright!
@shutterbugger ~ Thanks Jenn. Sounds like she won't be much of anything by the time she gets here...but we lose power so easily so that part should be a given.
Strong image, and sad. In the UK the network of cycle paths is not too bad, where I live only about 30% of my commute to work is on roads the rest is on canal paths, but then you have dogs rather than cars to contend with, I almost prefer cars.
