This statue is down at the harbor by the USS Midway Museum for those who are not from San Diego. It was replicated from a photograph taken in Times Square by a Life Magazine photographer in 1945 at the end of WWII. I didn't know it when I took this photo yesterday, but this man passed away last Sunday in a nursing home.
Ah, nice one! I have always liked this iconic statue and have been hoping to get down to the Midway area one of these days to take a photo of this. Yes, he was 15 when he joined the Navy, last name was McDuffy, and he was 86 when he passed away. We heard an interesting story about him on our local news.. You probably heard the same one -- SD station..
@anazad511 Thanks Ana. It may have been down for restoration at the time you were here. I'm not sure as I've only lived in San Diego for about 2 years. The salty air took it's tole on the artwork so I know it was down for a while.
I love your photo and the info is interesting. Do we know the photographer? A strange coincidence your timing of taking the shot just after this sailor died.
I know the photograph you mean. I think I've read that the woman actually did not know the sailor and was rather upset at what he did. But it's an iconic picture. I love your processing--makes it look like something Maxfield Parrish might have painted! Fav!
