Rainy ragged robin

The wild flower turf that we laid last year has turned pink with red campions and ragged robin. We just need them to dry out and the weather to warm up so the bees can get on them. Campions always remind me a great biology field trip I did in 1982 where we looked at the habitat of red, white and pink campions. There was a theory that one grew on disturbed land and the other on undisturbed and where they grew close together you got hybrids. I’m not sure if the outcome was clear cut or not. I know our beach study was published which always worried me because we didn’t know what we were looking at!

In other news I got slightly disorientated going to the supermarket and came off a junction too early which meant a nice route through Granchester. Just as i approached the village a bird of pray flew over, dipping right into my sight line with a rat in its talons. Shame I don’t have a dash cam. There was more drama at the other end of the detour when a van driver got out at the traffic lights to see to a stray dog that was in the road and the dog promptly jumped into his van. When he pulled over the dog jumped out into the road again and the driver, having inadvertently acquired a responsibility, had to go off in pursuit.

Weather: wet and cloudy again
Covid: quite a fiery performance on the Covid response from Dominic Cummings.
Good thing: I’ve planted up my first summer pot.
Such delicate beauty Judith....I have no idea about campians except I always remember their names. Potting up pots...everyone was turning into Ashlea garden centre when I went for Connie this morning. No potting up,here, we need to have another go at the brambles which are pushing their nasty little heads up again! More spraying!

@happypat I think it was Bunny Guinness’s and on creating a natural hedge that I read and she said never include brambles because you’ll never get rid of them! We haven’t got rid of ours but they are much less rampant - you need compliant neighbours too!

Beautiful sharp image. Love your idea of a wildflower turf. Did you buy the turf ready to go?

@busylady yes - it’s very expensive so it’s not a big area!

Absolutely beautiful! Wildflower turf is delightful. I wish I had enough sunny space in the back garden to give it a try.
You had quite an interesting detour on your way to the market. ☺

ravissant

@peggysirk over here there are some turfs suitable for shade.

@busylady you can also get plug plants to a put into turf you’ve already got - they are good value I think and we may do a patch round a tree. We couldn’t seed this area because it had a lot of nettles and undesirable weeds that we wanted to suppress at the same time as basically planting posh weeds!
