Fag Break

My walk yesterday did not get off to a good start as I found the crab apple tree we planted three years ago (and which was so pretty last spring) had been snapped in half by vandals during the night. Nigel says there's no point wondering why as there is no reasonable answer but it's so frustrating. It was also another grey, really cold day but when we got into the centre of town there was a real sense of vibrancy in the air. There was quite a bit of student activity and loads of Japanese girls taking photos of each other (with presumably quite small bits of Cambridge in the background!). I love street shots but have no idea how to take them successfully - they generally just look like people are spoiling the architecture. Anyhow I turned the corner round by the Arts Theatre and couldn't resist these two (or should I say 3?). I think they probably work at the rather posh hairdresser nearby and judging by the state of the pavement get through quite a lot of cigarettes. I pretended to take a picture of the nice alleyway through to Kings Parade and just slipped a bit! I know it doesn't compare to many of the street shots we get on 365 but it's the first one ever I've taken that I've liked!
I'm still a long way off being a photo-journalist though - I came across a rather sad scene of a student sobbing as he hugged his mum & dad goodbye - I was too busy thinking, not for the first time, that being a parent is a very hard job at times!
A day in the life! Great shot.

I like this picture....was looking for some motivation for today. Maybe that is an idea....head down to the market for some street shots??

Well done, I haven't got the nerve to photograph people in the street, nice shot. Sorry to hear about your tree. I get upset when the kids near us do the same.

Sorry about the tree -- nice shot though.

Great shot of moody youth! Sorry about the tree - that kind of thing breaks my heart - we had a tree loss from our park last year due to 'vandalism' - not as drastically wanton but over a period of time - totally lethal http://365project.org/islawight/365/2010-07-20

@poochpottery @kathyd @emb151 @oblateal @ottery09 @islawight Thank you for your kind photo feedback and tree sympathy. And June I was ready to run - the girl on the phone was not best pleased with her boyfriend and I didn't want to annoy her any more!

I love this shot- those girls look fierce - both in the America's Next Top Model sense and in the really p'd off sense. Sorry about the crab apple - yeah, that's the trouble with mindless violence - what did that tree ever do to them?

Bravo! Excellent street capture,, Judith. And you have the sneaky technique down pat! This is a wonderfully interesting shot ~ full of attitude, interest and color. Well done.
I'm so sorry to hear about the tree vandalism. I don't understand why some people do the things they do.

@helenmoss @peggysirk @gill Glad you like them - they don't really help my hairdresser phobia though!
