Geordie Girl by judithg

Geordie Girl

I took some 'arty' shots in Newcastle but this one summed up the city for me more. What struck me (from our short visit) was the streets having a real mix of posh shops, cheap shops and boarded up shops all next to each other (odd for a major city centre). My view may have been coloured somewhat as Newcastle were playing Sunderland (local rivals) in the football league and when we arrived at 10am the streets outside the pubs were heaving with men with several beers already lined up. You'll notice the girl here seems to have her beers in the bag ready for kick off and there are three blokes with Newcastle shirts on (just about every male and a fair proportion of females were in football shirts). It was an odd sort of day and we cleared off as soon as the game ended and the pubs emptied. I know people who love the city but it didn't happen for me - maybe I should go back and try again.
I like the Jordie lads in the background in the football strip - nice candid. Go back some time I love it but it takes some getting used too but is fantastic really

This looks like a place you could really get some great street shots. Love her expression, uncertantity of who/what the subject of your photograph is, mixed with a thought of, do I ask about it or not? Great candid.

She has a little beer belly !! I think it is definatly a young persons city now & a cool Uni town but not the old place I knew in my youth ! A great street scene & I love the shot of the girl & the laddo's in the back ground ! I think the pink T shirt makes this shot !!

..aye, the winter clothes shop went out of business years ago. NO-ONE wears a coat at night - especially in the Winter.

Great candid shot. I like how there's lots to look at in this.

Great street composition. Interesting to read both your take on the town and Simon,s

I lived in Sunderland for a couple of years, and the party garb, just like that, in midwinter used to make me shudder with cold thinking about it, but there's lots great about both Newcastle and Sunderland

@sleepdozer57 We reckoned they were kept warm with slap - never seen so much make up on young faces that don't need it! Blimey I'm getting old.....

the depth perception is cool

@shadesofgrey My husband, standing next to me, was having a fit when I took this. He thought she was going to challenge me - but I said, 'No, I was taking the street.' All innocence!
@marytj Too much beer I suspect - lots of young girls in this country are drinking too much and they get the bellies to go with it.

Hey there Geordie girl, swinging down the street so fancy free.....la llala ...sorry Judith!! I guess we all think we're getting old when we think...Put some clothes on girl!! and that tummy.....and I should worry and I'm twice (3x?) her age!! LOL great shot!

Cracking shot, i love her expression! I could never really warm to Newcastle either, but that's probably because the Edinburgh > London always turns into a party train after the Newcastle stop!

(and not the fun kind of party, the way-too-drunk and embarrassing kind)

Great street shot - she does look like she's about to get arsey but hey - as you say - you're taking the street.

Cool street shot. But why on earth are Newcastle natives called Geordies?
August 26th, 2011
@halkia I've been wondering that but it seems to be a controversial topic! Either because lots of the local coal miners were called George or because of fierce local support for King George II (I suppose those two could be related) or because the miners used safety lamps called Geordies designed by George Stephenson. I like the last one!

Wonderful candid - love her slightly bewildered expression!

@judithg I like that last one too! English is such a quirky language. I only found out the other day why boiler suits are named as they are. I had been wondering about that too.
