A day of two halves... I took Adam to the V&A's Post-Modernism exhibition this morning. I'd like to say it's an homage to affluence and greed but some of it was sarcastically criticising capitalism and consumerism - it was hard to sort out what was doing what (but I'm just a scientist - I was waving bacteria about not noticing when it was all going on). It was very good, especially seeing that people were cutting and pasting photos by actually cutting and pasting photos (Grace Jones' iconic album cover was done that way) - although explaining the 'sound- and vision-track' of my teenage years as 'history' was a little disconcerting. In the afternoon we headed over to Spitalfields and Brick Lane for some vintage shopping. I fell out with Adam as he disappeared while I was taking photos (I wasn't worried about him - I was just very grumpy after having to stand on the slow train to Liverpool St (King's Cross trains being cancelled) and I'd walked miles and miles already and I didn't want to be wandering around looking for him) so I took myself for a coffee at the 'Brick House Coffee Shop'. 8/10 for coffee and friendliness, 0/10 for mindless techno music, 10/10 for people watching. I got myself in prime position for snapping these chaps across the road (though my best pic was 'through' the sugar shaker - oops). I have to say that they really smelled terrible but were obviously welcome outside the coffee shop (in fact a sign above them invited them to 'Sit' - unfortunately altered!) A funky-looking, social worker-type lady came to check they were OK and a few passers-by stopped and passed the time of day - it was great to see so many people looking out for them.
I'll probably post another pic or two tomorrow but I'm off to a big bubbly bath as every muscle is aching! I really admire our London brethren - I find taking decent pics there really hard - it's exhausting just existing in the city! Catch up with you all very soon I promise.
Great picture. What a couple of characters. Love your commentary. Especially the bit about the sign to sit. That tickled me. Enjoy the bubble bath - it sounds like you deserve it.
What a shot! Love this and the story accompanying it. And what a marvelous day you had...a bubble bath sounds like the perfect way to bring it to a close.
@andycoleborn I was on the look out for 365ers - in fact I kept falling over another photographer and nearly asked him but decided he would think I was barking! I've discovered the trick is to do an @rich57 and make yourself comfortable with a coffee!!
super street shot judith, full of detail. the two main subject compliment each other in the frame and look great through your lens ....it's a good job no one has yet come up with a camera that catches smell too !!!!
Oh how well you did catching these two Judith, a shot in the style of @robinwarner !! Really interesting chaps & I love the woman's red bag round his neck & the other guys colourful hat !!! A set in a coffee shop sounds the best way to catch people like this !!! Sounds a very hectic day but worthwhile !!!
Wow, what a couple of characters. With their brightly colored clothes, I thought for sure you were going to tell me that they are part of an exhibit. So nice that they are looked after.
Great shot . Like you I love the odd day in London ut find I have sensory overload and now I get frustrated by nothaving the time to take as manty pics as i'd like.
Me thinks everyone likes this Judith!! I'm a bit late to the party.....vintage shopping sounds good, get anything nice? I love the way the gus on here influence us in some way ...Brick Lane = @andycoleborn cafe ratings= @rich57 street people = @robinwarner I think Judith you have been well and truly 365'd!! Bubbly bath....mmmmmm oh and btw....brill shot! lol
stunning street shot Judith - this is the thing I love about London - some great vantage points and beneath the hustle and bustle folk do look after each other! These look like cool fellas!
@Cherrill LOL - I was thinking that as I took it! I should have gone hdr with selective colour and added a weather record to capture even more 365 legends!!
@rich57 Dammit - I forgot the loo (I'm guessing not high but could be wrong!) They got bonus points for finding me coming out of the bagel shop to return my lens cap though!
@Cherrill hahaha me and Rich discussed you comments tonight... So i'm know for a trendy and/or run down street and Rich for his cafe reviews... but neither for our photography LOL...
@robinwarner I'm honoured Robin!! I don't know how you manage to get such sharp portraits. I had the camera sitting on a table but several shots were blurred because the fellas moved - just not enough light I'm guessing. And then traffic kept getting between me and the 'target' - I was sitting there thinking, 'Robin does this day after day and it's just not easy!!!'
Wow ........People watching at its best........A superb candid shot.......I wonder what stories they would have to tell............................FAV!
Another latecomer to the party - just starting to catch up on people's pics from the last couple of weeks. This is absolutely fantastic - you've really captured these real-life street characters - love all the colours mixed in with the grittiness. I don't know - you country folk - you come over here, you take our street photos, you take our ...
