Remembrance

I took mum and dad to the American Cemetery at Madingley this afternoon. It was dreary and the photos I had in mind were a non-starter due to the weather. The cemetery is on a slope in a beautiful location and there are American oak and maple trees amongst the 3000 or so graves. Along one side is a memorial wall with the names of over 5000 US servicemen whose bodies were never found. Glenn Miller is included on this wall. Since the wreaths were laid this morning the oak leaves have continued to fall.
I may not have much time for commenting until Sunday but will be with you all then. Many thanks for the lovely birthday messages and for making my day!
I love the POV of this shot...very effective.
Have a good weekend!

Yet another superb shot Judith. I love the way that you have captured the oak leaves, and the imagery that it conveys.

@judithg Judith thnx for your comments. My mum and dad browse my pictures on here and neither of them knew about the German soldiers carrying him back. My brother knew about it , he remembers my grandad telling us about it. My dad said he rarely spoke about his time in France. How strange is that? 365 revealed a bit of Howcroft history that neither my dad or my mum knew about !

@phil_howcroft My great grandad told his son-in-law about his WWI experience but not his daughter because he considered it to be too upsetting. Unfortunately we are too late now to ask him what he was told. And my friend's grandad 'liberated' Auschwitz and barely spoke at all after that experience. My parents are 'silent browsers' as well - it's a good way keeping up with my antics!

The leaves look not dissimilar to fallen bodies of soldiers. That was the thought that came to mind as I looked at this poignant shot.
