Inspired by @busylady's beautiful picture of Ely cathedral in the sunshine we headed over that way with the dog this morning. It was rather more dreary today but I was struck (not for the first time!) by the sheer size of the cathedral. Cambridge is not without impressive buildings of its own but Ely cathedral is massive. It can be seen for miles and miles across the Fens - I'm sure I read somewhere that if you could see it you had to contribute to its upkeep which is why it was built so huge! The Fens around are were originally a swamp and Ely, on slightly raised ground was an island, and on the island sits 'the Ship of the Fens'.
This is magnificent Judith & I am loving seeing this picture of the cathedral because when my mum used to go & visit my sister in Norfolk she used to get off the train at Ely & always said what a wonderful building this was & I have never had chance to go & have a look yet. '' Ship of the Fens '' that looks such an apt title too !
Very interesting shot Judith. There's so much detail there. I'm much more used to seeing the long distance shots of the whole of the cathedral, so if you had showed me the photo without naming the place I'd have been struggling to place it at Ely!
I love Ely Cathdral - I've only been there a couple of times in passing - it'd be a good one to go back to with my wide angle!! great perspective on this - lovely tones and textures in the architecture
Great story too.
