Busy morning on the lake by judithg

Busy morning on the lake

So should I have cropped those ducks??? Gorgeous spring day today. A coot was working like a trooper going back and forth to the reeds to bring extra nest material for his demanding wife (who sat on the nest giving instructions and titivating a bit).
I'm not going to comment on 'the big argument' thread that has been playing out (because as a mother my opinion would be worthless apparently) but I am going to say @scrivna you are doing a great job. Don't be put off by the vocal minority. And no I'm not easily offended - I just think there's no need for nastiness towards anybody.
@scrivna - in case typing in the blurb doesn't register.

This is awesome and I think the ducks add a nice touch. Great shot!
March 20th, 2012
I like the ducks there too; well done!
March 20th, 2012
I like the ducks. The larger bird looks like he is watching over his domain with the ducks left in the photo.
March 20th, 2012
I love the lighting on the swan - she's really showcased well. I have a hard time with cropping choices. I think the crop may have been a little too tight if you got rid of the ducks. Plus, they make the white swan appear all the more magestic in comparison! Beautiful!
March 20th, 2012
I think the ducks add to the picture. Nice bum shot of the swan ;)!
March 20th, 2012
beautiful shot, and I like the crop like these, with the ducks in the background, love the lighting on his feathers!!!
March 20th, 2012
Lovely capture of the swan's wings and ruffley (sp.?) feathers. I also like that you left the ducks in the pic.
Oh, and good for you on that note to @scrivna. If I were in his shoes I'd be tearing my hair out.
March 20th, 2012
Nice feather and bum detail- although damn - does this mean I can't post the swan pic I took this morning? Its all I've got and am going to be late home...I'm with you regarding other issues.
March 20th, 2012
I really like the ducks and the detail on the swan's feathers is totally fabulous as is the reflected shadow
March 20th, 2012
@meisen325 @fueast I agree, hats off to @scrivna for providing such a great site and handling it all.
March 20th, 2012
Yep ducks should go :D
You made me go read the discussion well skim through it, still none the wiser :D
March 20th, 2012
I like the ducks too, I would have been undecided too. You want the swan to stand out and think the ducks may detract, but they don't. As said they add to the picture. Beautiful picture
March 20th, 2012
I love the swan - the feathers and reflection are fabulous :oD undecided re the ducks.......
March 20th, 2012
@johnnyfrs I think it's the best way!!
March 20th, 2012
@fueast I don't believe a restriction has been placed on the number of swan pictures ... so long as it isn't better than mine ;0)
March 20th, 2012
@judithg well its not great but I've just got home and its going dark and whilst I didn't stay as late as intended its been long day so I don't care!
March 20th, 2012
Beautiful composition Judith
March 20th, 2012
The little plain everyday ducks only compare the magnificence of that beautiful swan so I think better in. Love the way he/she is just displaying the feathers slightly, no rushing around there !!! Spring is a busy time on the water !!
March 20th, 2012
Ok.....I like this as is.....beautiful swan detail and reflections....leave the ducks in...adds perspective and draws your eye up the picture. and...hear hear to your comments.
March 20th, 2012
great capture, love the ducks too
March 20th, 2012
Think I've been in a pedalo that looked like this once! Love the shadows in this one...
March 20th, 2012
Glad you left the ducks. I like them there and I love the swan's wings in the sun.
March 20th, 2012
Oh it's swan day today - you lucky people out swan watching on this fine spring equinox day (apparently according to google). I like the ducks - would have liked to see the coot too - can't have everything.
March 20th, 2012
I love the way her feathers are all fluffed up, enjoying the sun, does make me think of ballerinas
March 20th, 2012
fabulous capture! almost looks like you could take a ride!
March 20th, 2012
lovely light and feathers, nice capture of the ducks too - and I'm another one staying out of the argument, but I'm also another mother so worthless
March 20th, 2012
and, @scrivna I agree wholeheartedly with @judithg . great job. I love the site and you are doing a fab job :-)
March 20th, 2012
Congratulations on two in top 10!
March 20th, 2012
A lovely shot. I watched our two resident swans building nest number two today. He was handing her bits of reed to make the nest with - fascinating.
March 20th, 2012
@islawight Well I might dig him out...,
March 20th, 2012
Beautiful. His feathers look so soft.
March 20th, 2012
Wonderful shot!!
March 20th, 2012
Oh beautiful, what a stunning shot
March 20th, 2012
Beautiful. Its as though he (or she)'s posing for you!
March 20th, 2012
Love this, great capture!
March 20th, 2012
like the ducks love the swan.
great viewpoint great shot
March 20th, 2012
Judith you've done a great job here, swans are really hard to photograph , the whites can get blown out, but yours are full of detail. I had to laugh at @jannaellen comment re the swans bottom......I cannot say I am qualified to comment on the quality of a swans bottom
March 20th, 2012
This is very beautiful! The ducks don't disturb me at all!
I agree, @scrivna you're doing a great job, it's your site and you should make it as you want it. Didn't want to be involved in this thread, I'm not here for this.
March 20th, 2012
Those feathers are wonderful! Fluffed up real nice for your shot!
March 21st, 2012
Great angle - love the fluff!
March 21st, 2012
Gorgeous shot. I wouldn't have cropped either.
March 21st, 2012
gorgeous swan, perfect crop
March 21st, 2012
I vote the composition is perfect as is. Great detail and color and presence!
March 21st, 2012
Beautiful
March 21st, 2012
Well caught - beautiful birds - all three of them!
March 21st, 2012
I think the ducks add to the shot. You can never have too many swan shot.....I love them.
March 21st, 2012
Fabulous detail on ruffley (sp?) wings of said swan, prefer ducks in as I think it would be tight and unbalanced if they were out......
as to thread.....no idea what the issues are but definitely go with the "lets be nice" mentality.
March 21st, 2012
Fabulous!
March 21st, 2012
I love the swans wings puffed out like this, I'm quite happy for the ducks to stay, they were there after all!
March 21st, 2012
@melaniesavage That's a very good point!
March 21st, 2012
Beautiful shot xx
March 21st, 2012
Lovely and elegant shot!
March 21st, 2012
Great shot and I'm loving those ducks - they make for such a nice contrast :-) And I'm not a mum but kind of just feel like staying away from any of the non-photo discussions from now on...it's just not worth it!
March 21st, 2012
Great shot.
March 23rd, 2012
I love the ducks! They give perspective
March 23rd, 2012
Beautiful swan, fantastic colors. Think, it's good you didn't crop the ducks, that makes a nice contrast and gives depth to the photo
March 25th, 2012
Gorgeous lighting and detail. Undecided re ducks. In one way they detract and in another they make the swan look even more 'regal'
