No through road

This is normally a passable road but it's one way towards us (hence the sign). There are a couple of 'fords' where two streams cross the road and this time last year they were hardly a trickle. When we walked over for a look yesterday you could tell that the waters had been up to three and a half feet. Luckily the houses here are built on higher ground - in Cambridge there have been quite a few properties flooded, one lot had had their flood defences stolen by metal thieves and another installed their flood defences at the front only to find that the drains backed up and the water filled their houses from the back gardens.
A familiar sight! Our fords have been looking 'a bit lively' lately too.
You have to wonder at the sort of people who would steal flood defences...

Eek it harps rained a lot

@humphreyhippo Same people that steal war memorials - keen on metal but lacking a moral compass...

Oh dear! It's bad there. Luckily, living on an island, everything flows to the sea and there are no large rivers to overflow. But getting really fed up with constant rain...

Oh dear - looks nasty! I can't believe the amount of rain we've had . I'm escaping tomorrow for a few days - hoping for better weather!

Well, the weather is just so dreary but photos and stories like yours just make us all grateful we have a warm and dry house.

Isn't there talk about the government investing in some sort of future protection against flooding? Nice shot.
July 16th, 2012
@aspada Lots of talk!! They have actually worked on a lot of areas and in fact they've improved Cambridge enormously by renovating the drainage canals around town - it used to flood most years but this is the first time since they did it - extreme and prolonged wet weather....

I think this road makes a very pretty river as long as no one was flooded...a pretty curve in the road & the house beyond! I can see where the ford is & I hope it never gets to 6 foot, that would be very alarming.

Every picture tells a story ~ and this well illustrates your unbelievably wet summer. Hope you see an end to the rain soon. Although I think I read that wet weather was expected for much of the Olympics...but that was a while back, so maybe the forecast has improved since then.

Dramatic shot. Not great cycling weather either!

Oh my -- I hope you guys get a break soon.

And here we are in a drought all over the country. Hope we all get a break soon. Pretty shot though. Almost like this is that way it normally looks.
July 16th, 2012
Every picture tells a story! You seem to have had more than your share of the floods.
July 16th, 2012
Oh horrid flood stories - good pic of the flood action though ...
July 16th, 2012
Great pic - hope the road appears again soon
July 16th, 2012
Excellent signage! Great ironic capture.
July 16th, 2012
Great capture of the way it is around the country at the moment!
July 16th, 2012
This photo is extraordinary. I hadn't realised it had got so bad in Cambridge.
July 16th, 2012
I'd want my Wellies for that footpath!
July 16th, 2012
What a wet and soggy season you have endured... hope the flooding ends... but I like the way the water curves in this photo.
July 16th, 2012
Nice curves but hip high boots needed!
July 16th, 2012
Maybe a photo journal book re the summer cambridge flooded again?
July 16th, 2012
I love the curves but I'd want hip high boots

Judith this sums up the 'British Summer 2012' in one image !
July 16th, 2012
Very ironic. What is happening with this mad weather! xx
July 16th, 2012
Wow! That's not good. I hope you get a break from the rain soon,
