I've shuffled things about and gone back to our NY trip last year. Our most sombre event was visiting the 9/11 memorial site. It's certainly a reminder that numbers translate into individual souls although I confess I did not like the design. I found the water running into a dark hole into the ground very unsettling and I didn't feel I would be in any way comforted to visit there if I had lost a loved one. But maybe it's not about comfort it's about remembering dark days and working to prevent them.
Thoughtful post and text and I like the way you often convey the whole photographically through a part. 'Synedoche' in literature but not sure if it can be applied to photogaphy - perhaps.
How perceptive of you to feel that Judith. I have only seen the memorial on the TV but liked the waterfall idea but wondered what was the point of that deep hole too,,,it wasn't at all hopeful of the future or uplifting for those grieving.....you would look down there & think dark thoughts. I might feel different seeing it in person though.
A beautiful tribute for this never to be forgotten anniversary.
@happypat It's deliberately designed so that you can't see the bottom and it disappears into oblivion. It made me feel a bit sick thinking about what's down there - I'd have preferred some light and more of a suggestion of heaven.
@fueast Will try my best for 12 - having checked Nigel will be in for (another mattress) delivery he's now on a conference call for big chunk of morning which is mucking up my dog walking/lunch plans. Goodness knows what he's doing working when I've got things to do! Will try my best - shouldn't be too much later - I'll have my phone at the ready. I'm trying to give away Adam's old wardrobe but the charity shops won't take it and getting on Freecycle is a nightmare.
@judithg What a baffling array of excuses. I'm sure Nigel can answer the door with a phone in his hand. I went to the loo and made a coffee during my last conference call...will text you when I'm done.
@fueast I know - I realised when I'd posted!! The wardrobe is in my car so I need to get rid of it tomorrow - that's why it's significant - and the tip doesn't open till 9am. The conf call is 10-11 so my 1 hour dog walk window is all messed up. I'll take him for a short one and he can have another later on. And Nigel will be locked in his shed during that phone call - and it's not en suite!!
I haven't been to see it, but would like to. We had a remembrance at the middle school where I work (and where I had been working that day). The tears come so quickly for us adults. We keep ourselves busy while the principal reads the timeline of that morning, tolling a bell for every horrific moment, it feels like an electric jolt. Then a student reads a poem that had been written by a 13 year old. Then another student plays Taps. These kids weren't even born yet. Let's pray that this is as close as they come to experiencing a horrible event.
Great capture....definitely like it in B&W... I found the site of the 9/11 memorial to be a VERY sad place indeed. However, I really liked the design....the abyss, the water (lots, and lots of tears!) running into the hole where the buildings used to be, the black granite with all the names carved on it....found it very moving and sombering..
