Having been very efficient with work and dog walk yesterday morning I settled down to an afternoon of domestic goddery making apple chutney. It simmered away for hours and I knocked up some chocolate cornflake cakes in the middle (met with much scoffing later as my description of them as 'pudding' was apparently very amusing - but not so funny that the other sort of scoffing didn't ensue...). On a roll, I stuck a roast chicken in the oven with some fancy potato dish and was all ready with my jam jars when my phone pinged a reminder. Strangely it said, 'Tutorial evening tonight' which came as a surprise as I was convinced it was the day after. Frantic checking of e-mails confirmed that my phone was in fact correct so I whipped upstairs to change out of cooking clothes and reappeared to the smell of chutney... burning.... Much cursing ensued as Nigel appeared home just in the time to head out again leaving a half-cooked chicken in the oven, temperature turned down a bit and fingers well and truly crossed that it would be fit to eat after 3 additional hours of cooking.
Anyway - the photo - the bicycle is actually outside my friend Janet's house (once owned by Francis Crick of double helix fame) with The Hawks' Club next door - this is the men's sporting club for 'Cambridge Blues'. Janet told me that the BBC once filmed Prince Philip on the steps of The Hawks' Club and off to the left hand side was her young son sitting on their steps with Vimto all down the front of his T-shirt.
Four GT:
1. Adam's very nice tutor.
2. The burnt pan may unexpectedly be cleanable.
3. A rather shrivelled chicken was still edible.
4. Caught up with Rebecca on our wet dog walk.
Ooh how exciting the Crick house. Sounds like your kids have the same 'what's for pudding?' automatic reflex as mine. For some bizarre reason they expect pudding after dinner every night. Why is that? We hardly ever have pudding. Maybe something to do with school dinners.
I have had a very surprisingly productive day in the kitchen too...I blame GBBO giving me the urge to bake, not good for the waistline though!
Lovely bike shot...I have missed them lately! Sorry you didn't have time to bask in cooking glory & had to go out.
That's how domestic goddess moments usually turn out in my experience - glad it was salvageable! Lovely shot - I find classic bikes and railings irresistible!
Umm - I have a pile of apples too from a friend's tree. We don't eat chutney so it's pies, crumbles etc unless you can think of anything else?!
Oh yes, thank you, forgot cake - I did make a new apple cake recipe with almonds in.

Nice shot btw.
