I loitered outside the new 'traditional sweetshop' (it's a chain - and we've already got one that is always packed full of visiting kids) on King's Parade waiting for the 'moment' to happen. It was entertaining watching people's reaction to the window display made of jelly babies - most people finding it absolutely hilarious - including this lovely trio of schoolgirls who looked rather quizzically at me, turned to look at the window and then fell about laughing. They then lined themselves up to have photos taken with the royal couple, as you do.
Four good things:
1. It's not often that I take a photo that makes me smile over and over again but this is one.
2. In my run of schmoozing with the celebs, just after I took this I saw Gavin Hastings (amazing Scottish rugby player) and his wife walking down King's Parade. I did not accost him even though I have met him before, 15 years ago, at a charity event at the kids' nursery - his son Adam and my son Adam had a nice play together and Nigel (not easily starstruck) tried not to be too obviously excited by being in the casual presence of his rugby idol.
3. It's Friday and I'll be organising a real G&T very soon.
4. New Eateries popping up all over Cambridge - one of the best wine shops has expanded and now does £5 'plates' and with £5 corkage you can sit and make your way through the contents of the shop. There's a new place that's going to do 'meat, bread and beer' and a posh fish and chip shop that looks yummy.
Aww, bless them. Love the girls' expressions ;)! Sounds like all the more reason to return to Cambridge soon (our visit is marked for March/April - hope you're there!)
Lovely and obliging young ladies! I'll definitely like to know the location of some of those eateries if I come to Cambridge. About time we came as the last time was on our honeymoon in 1970!!!
The picture is made of jelly babies...incredible! What a fun crowd too, I think they have heard of the new eateries too......next stop meat, bread & beer!
That display is hilarious - who on earth had the patience to do that! Love the capture of the schoolgirls. By the way, the man in red you photographed the other day was featured in readers' photos in today's Guardian!
Your good thing 4 sounds especially good. The idea of working ones way through a wine shop (with a few £5 plates to stop it being lush-y, obviously) is rather appealing.
