The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has had an exhibition on called 'Black hair' and it's a series of 'rooms' - living rooms and barbers shops recreating homes and businesses from the 1960's (ish) onwards where afro hair has been cut, coloured, straightened and generally manipulated. There are also quite a few memory tapes from people describing, for the most part, being tortured by their mothers in a bid to tame their hair! This shop is on Mill Road which has been shortlisted as one of the most cosmopolitan roads in the country. It is noisy, busy, the traffic is dreadful, parking is a nightmare and many people wouldn't live anywhere else. Definitely benefits from viewing large in this case.
Three GT:
1. Nigel's plane went on time despite the air traffic control difficulties.
2. I've assembled and decorated the new tree - quite a lot of work involved it turns out but it looks OK.
3. I appear to have acquired an extra daughter who has been invited to the 6th form girls' hockey night out - I'm sure Adam will be delighted!
Fave, just love this! My daughter used to demand to have her hair "relaxed", luckily her friend's mom could do it, much cheaper, but just as tedious and unpleasant.
Great contrasts between outside and in. Must go to that exhibition - I was one of those girls whose mothers tried to make something decent out of my hair - I hated it
Love everything about this shot Judith! it is fantastic so much going on, love the bike in the shop and the lady walking by and the hive of activity inside. Great observation. Fav
I love the steamy window and you can just imagine the warmth in there. It looks like a real work of art is being created and I love the look of concentration on the hairdresser's face.
Lots to see here Judith , I always think black hair must be a nightmare to deal with & yet can look so lovely just as nature intended.
A very modern museum indeed & yet so relevant for today......you even managed to get TWO bikes in there!!!
