Nigel has been working very hard of late so I dragged him out to YoSushi for a 'Board meeting' this lunchtime (discussion of whether to go ahead with construction of a carport or not - if there is any doubt about whether or not we are middle-aged I believe I have just dispelled it). He multi-tasked with a haircut which was excellent because it gave me time to trundle off to The Backs where I had noticed a lot of standing water and, therefore, some photo ops. We have a very high water table in Cambridge (presumably because we are pretty much at sea level but I gave up geography in Form 3 so I can't be sure) and the ground is totally saturated. I was astounded by the height and vigour of the drainage channels that run into the Cam - they are fully fledged fast flowing rivers. Who knows how they will/won't cope with the weather that is forecast over the weekend. Further downstream the boat houses are already flooded in order to spare the colleges and upstream they had special crews out trying to sort out the overflow. But of course we are nothing on the miseries elsewhere in the country - thoughts to those poor people again this weekend.
Three GT:
1. Another puddle - another reflection of St John's.
2. No punting on the dangerous-looking river because it's too high to let them under the arches of the bridges - I always worry about them when it's like this.
3. The only real inconvenience is the flooding in Waitrose carpark and the 4x4 mums were loving it.
You could almost turn this upside down Judith ..such clear reflections....such beauty in Cambridge! Amazing that this is only standing water...I heard that you had lots of rain yesterday.
Oh dear a carport...all downhill from now on!!
this is beautiful - that reflection is just so clear. There's a spectacular bit of flooding in Grantchester too I noticed today - including a ford across the road near the bridge - not that I need an excuse for my own personal choice of tractor, of course, but I did enjoy swishing through it on my big wheels! If it gets any deeper, not sure even the Landrover will get through though.
@helenmoss You're allowed a 4x4 - you're 'country' ;0) Sounds like the watermill house will be worried. We seem to be a max capacity for water and we've had a fraction of the South's deluge.
Amazing reflection..... at least all this rain is good for something, and we are very fortunate here where I live in Essex not to have the terrible floods of the west country. Love the clarity and composition!
Superb and spectacular Judith. A big fat FAV. I am concerned for this weekend. Nearly got washed away in a ditch today trying to retrieve Saski's new donut toy. It is still missing!
Another terrific reflection of St John's. Really unusual to see quite so much water around. I had a message today to say that Linton church was under threat - it last flooded in 2001 - a 'hundred year' event.
Absolutely spectacular! The most impressive reflections I've ever seen...simply gorgeous!
I'm guessing 'the Board' approved plans for the carport construction...
@jantan@peggysirk Yes approved - more from necessity than desire - strongly opposed by Adam even though we have assured him that you won't be able to see it from the road!
Lovely - despite the depressing reason for the puddliness. We've had our first bout of river bursting its banks incident in Waltham Forest - up the road in Chingford, river Lea briefly flooded some neighbouring roads.
Oh dear a carport...all downhill from now on!!
Fav...ps what news on Monty?
I did geography to A level, allegedly, but remember absolutely none of it save for the phrase 'blocking anticyclone'. Which is useful in conversation.
