The 'Newseum' in Washington DC is a must visit for anybody with an interest in photography and although the subject matter for news reporters is often hard, harrowing and controversial the museum addresses issues of ethics and morality head on. At the top of the museum is a moving memorial focussing on the loss of a news photographer who went into the danger zone on 9/11 and a number of engineers who were working on the TV transmitter that was on the top of one of the towers (on the left of this shot). I think we often take journalists for granted in these situations and assume that they are hard-headed and know how to cope but there is an excellent film during which the news reporters describe how they really had to fight their emotions to get through the terrible day. Also, as this and other transmitters were destroyed, the very act of getting news on the air was threatened and they had to work fast to find other, almost obsolete ways of getting a signal to carry the information around the world. It's a fascinating place that really asks a lot of hard questions about photo journalists, about their responsibilitiesand their talent and achievement. Taken last summer.
One day I will make it to the US and this has just been added to the list of places that I have to go.
News gathering and television is an industry that can be given a bad name, but the majority of us (I work in the tv industry, not as a journo though) just want to do the best we can to make sure it happens and that everyone sees what they need to know. It is an industry where you love the job or you don't do it.
Wonderful capture and thank you for sharing
@frameit You must have such an interesting working environment - so much creativity & can you imagine if they had lost transmission for NY on 9/11 - there would have been mass panic.
Great 9/11 photo Judith ! It must be a very challenging job being a journalist & something one rarely thinks beyond today's headlines ! This must be a fascinating place to visit & I must remember if ever I get to Washington. Thanks for showing us this !
