St. Louis Building

My first attempt to set a manual technique for a night shot. I have been posting on this site for 2 years -all on auto setting - it is time to move to manual - wish me luck and please give me suggestions for improvement - anyone know of a good manual guide book?
I like the look of this shot

I also have been point and shoot on auto setting. It helped to teach composition, but very little else. My Get Pushed Challenge partner has me moving to Manual as well.
Good luck to us both - I will let you know if I find any good books.
BTW - not a bad shot for a newbie. I like it.

Well it worked out fine for a first shot at manual!

Just a thought, if you've been in full auto, you could try Aperture Priority first (probably Tv) on Canon if the Powershot supports it. That way, you get to play with the aperture but the camera will still try and expose correctly by automatically setting Shutter Speed.

@snaggy Thanks for the suggestion - there is a Tv selection on my camera. Now I just need to read and practice, practice, practice. I received a tripod for christmas and am able to try long exposure shots. For this one I just set the camera on the window ledge and set a timer to keep everything still. Look for more to come.

Love the starring effect of the streetlights. A book that is very helpful to me (as someone else just stepping over to manual) has been "Beyond Snapshots" by Rachel Devile & Peta Mazey. It explains everything very clearly, in language that can actually be understood (unlike the language in my very fat but not very helpful camera manual), and has lots of example photos as well,

@mace508 Thanks for the suggestion - just reserved that book from the library -
