Basking turtles

Today we visited the North Vancouver Island Wildlife Rescue. They rescue birds primarily, but have 10 black bear cubs currently and will do their best to rehabilitate all wildlife in distress. The goal is to reintroduce them to the wild, so they limit the human interraction. These turtles live in the pond on the property.
Beautiful turtles, awesome shot.

What lovely red-eared sliders! You got a nice photo...that fine line between getting close enough for a good one, and a hair's breath closer and "plop plop" they dive into the water!

@Weezilou Thanks for identifying these turtles - I was thinking they might be snappers or painted turtles. I don't know my turtles :)

@kathyo Kathy, the "Painted Turtles" were the sort that used to be given as prizes at fairs or bought in pet stores, but they were (to my knowledge) always red-eared sliders. I think the "painted" name came from the fact that they sometimes had paintings added to them...a nearly flat surface...) I went through a "very long turtle phase" for a number of years...
