At the rescue centre today I saw these slider turtles. These are rescued from people who bought them in a store and got tired of them. They are fed and live free at this location. They are invasive and if they were turned out wild, they would kill our native turtles.
Both fascinating to read this information and "tragic" that people find their pets to be disposable! I was unaware that they would kill other turtles; is that typical everywhere? (I don't know where you call home) This is such a lovely photo!
@Weezilou This happens alot of times when man interferes. Look at the cane toads in Australia....were brought in for pest control, and now they are the biggest pest. When there is no natural predator, they tend to breed and overtake the indigenous animals.
@kathyo You're preaching to the choir, Kathy! You mention Australia...people brought their little birds and pets so it would feel like England. For years now they've tried to corral the rabbits, and in the NE rain forests, the wild boars are digging up the soil as they root and it dries the land that should stay moist. Here in coastal California, it makes me so angry that people will smuggle in items that carry pests or even bring in the animals that don't belong here. ...maybe I need to get some rest tonight...this is my second tirade of the late evening!
