The citizens of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, built this cabin in recognition of Abraham Lincoln's stepmother, Sarah "Sally" Lincoln, who grew up in E-town. After Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks, died from the "milk sickness" when A. Lincoln was only nine years old, his father, Thomas Lincoln, returned to E-town from Indiana to propose marriage to Sally, whose first husband, Daniel Johnston, had died from cholera two years previous. The two were married in E-town and brought together Sally's three children and Thomas's two children into one family. Sally or Sairy, as she was known to those close to her, was a good second mother to Abraham Lincoln and encouraged him in the pursuit of his reading and studies. She deserves a place of honor in American history.
