This shot is several decades in the making. I used PicMonkey to edit an old photo of my Grandpa and then layered it over a flag shot I took this summer. My Grandpa served on the HMCS Athabaskan which sank in the English Channel during WWII. He survived with shrapnel in his back but was plucked from the ocean by the Germans, who operated and then kept him in a POW camp until the war ended. My kids and I stood in the rain and wind today in honour of him, and so many others, who made sacrifices for our privileged lives.
This photo touches me in so many levels Kim... My Grandfather had a similar story which I will talk about at the end of the month when we commemorate our liberation day. The more time goes by the more I appreciate their sacrifices. What you have created here is just stunning and a fave for me!
I love picmonkey but haven't learned how to layer yet but you have given me much inspiration to do it after seeing this one. I get emotional when it comes to the military. Your photo made my eyes water (in a good way.) Love this so much and of course, it's a Fav. Throwing in a big hug to ya and I would've stood in the rain and wind for him, too if I had been there. :)
What a stunning and poignant tribute to your grandfather. I am touched and moved at what horrors he and so many others endured to ensure our freedom. Instant FAV.
What a wonderful tribute - you've made a beautiful picture there, and so right that he and all he did should be remembered. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Oh, and well done for the double top 20 hit this week!!
Wonderful tribute to your grandfather. Very moving to hear his story. So nice that you took your children to the commemoration. You did a terrific layering shot. FAV.
