We drove up to Kirkwood (about 35 miles southwest of South Lake Tahoe) to go skiing for a few days. We found a few runs on the back side of the mountain that had really deep ungroomed powder. It was amazing! It took me a while to get used to it and I took a few falls but it was totally worth it. A great first day of skiing!
