I went to Paine's Creek tonight. The sky was dark and stormy, so I chose this photo based on the fact that it was the brightest photo of the day. I believe it is a young Ring-Billed Gull, a smaller gull that is popular on our beaches.
He looks like he's hunkering down. I hope Irene doesn't get too close to where you live. We got off pretty easy, she's skirting right up the coast, with hardly any wind or rain. Our beaches, however, will not be so fortunate. Major beach erosion is expected.
i just talked to my friend who is in Boston and she said she totally felt the quake and is doing all this stuff to prep. please say in and safe...i will be thinking of you...
Wow, what a great shot! I watched the news a lot today and literally feel sock to my stomach thinking about Irene...We are so close to both proposed paths Had to cancel Sophie's weekend campout bday party.Going to get some masking tape tomorrow..hope that I can find some!!!
@aj1268 So happy you were spared! Beach erosion is a problem here too. We're expected to have a new moon tide when (and if) the Irene hits us, so I suspect erosion will be the biggest problem here too.
@5unflow3r I haven't seen the news today, but the whole Cape is preparing for a big one. I just keep reminding myself of the hype over Earl last year at this time, and what a bust that was, thank God! So sorry Sophie's birthday party had to be canceled! :(
@robinwarner - Stay in? Are you joking? I plan to buy a rain shield for my camera and capture it all...just kidding (kind of). Thank you for your concern. I'm not really worried. These things tend to get alot of hype and then turn out to just be a bad Nor'easter. Here's hoping for that...
Today's post interests me on so many levels......ring billed gulls are a great rarity in UK unless they get blown off course. We had one on our East coast last year, took up residence on the local ice cream kiosk and attracted a lot of attention. I do hope you and everyone will ride out this oncoming storm.....Love your reply to @robinwarner about getting a rain shield and being out there to capture the moment! lol Typical 365 er! Hope Hugo has somewhere safe to be. :-)
I'm thinking about you and all the other 365ers that are waiting for Miss Irene! I hope it's hype--our news did the same thing with Carmageddon earlier this summer. I'm crossing my fingers and toes for y'all. Great capture of this gull--hope he stays safe too!
@keithdavid No worries...hurricanes are a pain in the neck, but as far as natural disasters go, I consider them pretty low risk. You have days to prepare and they aren't freaky like tornados. I am on Facebook as Laurie Higgins, with the same profile photo as I have here. I tried to find you there, but there are alot of Keith Davids and I could not find you.
@Cherrill While I was away in Vermont, my husband moved Hugo to the fireplace mantle...he's back on the bookcase now, just waiting for the storm to hit tomorrow morning. The only positive thing about a hurricane is it blows in unusual birds.
I hope you stay safe if Irene drops in!
very nice and soft photo Laurie
